Colonel Clay E. Mason is the commander of the 27th Special Operations Maintenance Group, Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico. He leads more than 1,800 Airmen and contractor personnel spanning three Maintenance Squadrons and a Maintenance Operations staff. The group provides aircraft maintenance support for a variety of special operations aircraft, to include the AC-130W Stinger II, MC- 130J Commando II, CV-22A Osprey, MQ-1 Predator, MQ-9 Reaper as well as other light and medium non-standard aviation transport aircraft.

Colonel Mason hails from Madison, Georgia. He attended the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where he received his Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics in 1987. He moved on to the University of Georgia where he earned his Master of Arts Degree in Mathematics and was commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program. He entered active duty as an aircraft and munitions maintenance officer in 1992. Colonel Mason became a munitions/missile maintenance officer with the career field reorganization in 2000 and is a master maintainer. He has held a variety of assignments at the joint combatant command, wing, and squadron level. Prior to assuming his current position, Colonel Mason served as the Commander, 314th Maintenance Group, 314th Airlift Wing, Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., where he provided maintenance support for the C-130H/J aircrew formal training mission supporting the Department of Defense and 47 allied nations.
