27th Special Operations Wing Equal Opportunity

9/5/2012 - CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M.  -- "Freedom is a little like air, you don't miss it until it's not there and then it takes a very few seconds to realize something critical has left your life." - Retired Lt. Col. James A. Fowler, Former Prisoner of War

The president issues a proclamation commemorating the observances and reminding the nation of those Americans who have sacrificed so much for their country. Observances of National Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Day are held across the country on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols and veterans' facilities. It is traditionally observed on the third Friday in September each year.

As military members, we understand the six articles of the Code of Conduct and the probability of capture while supporting various operations to uphold our national interests.

Specialized training is obtained to aid in honorable captivity and to keep faith in our country.

The POW/MIA motto is simple yet embedded with heartfelt meaning - "you are not forgotten." This day is set aside to remember the sacrifice of those who will never be forgotten.

The Air Force Sergeant's Association Chapter 1255 will commemorate the observance by holding a 24-hour Vigil Run beginning at 4 p.m. on Sept. 20 through Sept. 21 at the base track at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. Following the run, the wing will hold a retreat ceremony at Building 1 beginning at 4:30 p.m.

All Air Commandos are encouraged to come out, participate and show their support.
