10/19/2012 - CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- *This feature is the first in a series of Air Commando spotlights at Cannon. The Airmen being highlighted are recent Diamond Sharp award winners. Diamond Sharp is a monthly program where Airmen are recognized by wing leadership and first sergeants for their hard work and achievements.
When asked why he joined the Air Force, Airman 1st Class Sam Cargill, 551st Special Operations Squadron loadmaster, looked up thoughtfully before allowing an earnest smile spread across his face and stated:
"I grew up in a very small town and I wanted to travel - more than that, I wanted to fly!"
The 26 year-old Roanoke, Va., native graduated college with a Bachelor of Arts in History and is currently working toward a master's in ancient and classical studies.
"You don't find too many people with a passion for history, but it's something that really fascinates me," Cargill added. "I love what I am doing for the Air Force as well - loadmaster was first on my job selection list."
The Air Commando was recently recognized as a Diamond Sharp winner for November. Cargill has performed many administrative duties for his squadron since arriving here in April which earned him recognition among his peers.
"I love the close ties and community bond that we all seem to share being part of Cannon," Cargill stated. "I am working in a career field I wanted, on an airframe I wanted, all part of the newest cutting edge advancements in Air Force Special Operations Command. I hope to keep learning and improving as I'm faced with changes and challenges to help progress our mission forward."
