8/5/2013 - CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Airmen stationed at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., were on-hand to enjoy the 24th Annual Cannon Appreciation Day, Aug. 2, at Unity Park here.

Volleyball, watermelon and pie eating contests, a 5k run and horseshoe were among the festivities.

"Cannon Appreciation Day was an experience that really made me appreciate our bond with the local community," said Senior Airmen Christopher Sygney, 27th Special Operations Communications Squadron radar maintenance technician. "It's great to see so many Airmen and their families come out."

Cannon Appreciation Day drew a large crowd of Airmen, families and civilian personnel. Col. Tony Bauernfeind, 27th Special Operations Wing commander, after making his opening remarks, participated in the day's fun-filled events along with his family.

"This is a phenomenal event; all of the support we have received is something that makes this place truly special and as the wing commander, I couldn't be happier," Bauernfeind said. "An event such as this really shows that the local community is grateful for the things we do here at Cannon."

Free food and beverages were provided along with more than $3,500 worth of prizes that were raffled off to Air Commandos throughout the day.

"Cannon Appreciation day is an outstanding event that brings our community together to thank the brave men and women who serve," said David Landsford, mayor of Clovis, N.M. "When we build relationships within our community, we set a foundation for the future. This is something to be proud of."

Sponsoring the event, the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce, Committee of Fifty and the Clovis Industrial Development Corporation came together for members of the Cannon community.

"This event shows that the community really cares about what the men and women of Cannon do," said Sandra Taylor-Sawyer, Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce president. "We have tremendous respect for these Airmen. Cannon Appreciation Day is just one way we thank them for their service."
