CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, New Mexico -- A historic MH-53J Pave Low III helicopter was dedicated to Cannon Air Force Base’s air park during a ceremony Jan. 17, 2017, on base.
More than 150 Air Commandos and community members, along with past and present leaders in Air Force Special Operations Command, were in attendance of the ceremony to witness the newly restored helicopter take its place among the other aircraft on display by the front gate.
One of those attendees was retired Lt. Col. Corby Martin, who flew 33 combat missions in Operation Desert Storm including ones that took place on the very same Pave Low being dedicated. He acted as the guest speaker at the ceremony and provided insight into the aircraft’s symbolism.
“This (Pave Low) represents all the sacrifices by the Air Commandos that have come before you,” Martin said. “It is going to be a daily reminder of the dedication you have for, and the belief you have in, the Air Force Special Operation Command mission and the United States of America.”
The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of plaques stationed in front of the Pave Low describing the aircraft’s history and mission accomplishments, followed by a flyover conducted by two CV-22 Osprey aircraft. The display is open to all who want to view and learn about the new addition to the air park.
