Cannon, Clovis kick off community tours

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  In an effort to show Air Commandos what Clovis, New Mexico, has to offer, the Committee of 50 and the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce led the first Newcomers Community Tour Wednesday.

The quality of life initiative, which showed off industries, history and entertainment options in Clovis, took several first-term Airmen and newcomers on a half-day trip with community leaders whose passion helped save Cannon from closing in 2005.

“The goal for the tour is to get you out into Clovis and help you meet some new people,” Rhonda Bargman, Committee of 50 chairman, told attendees. “If you learn a little about the town, you might be inspired to find new things to do in the area.”

The Airman and Family Readiness Center plans to offer the tour on the third Wednesday of every month, according to Cynthia Friday-Allison, AFRC chief.

Wednesday’s tour included visits to a local dairy, nearby schools, community parks and a museum celebrating the town’s rock ‘n’ roll heritage, but some of the tour’s informative portions also came during conversations between stops.

“Who likes skiing?” called Stacy Martin, 2015 Committee of 50 chairman. The lifelong Clovis native ticked the names of five popular resorts off his fingers. Bargman seemed to know every place in town good for hosting a special event. And James Burns, the committee’s 2017 chairman-elect, attested to the excellence of a Clovis education for his own two children.
Even Airmen who already know a few local landmarks could benefit from the expertise of the Committee of 50 and Chamber of Commerce members who hosted and stopped in during the tour.
