A free 9-hole disc golf course opened in Unity Park at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico, December 11th, 2017.

The course is always open to those with their own discs, but free rental discs and maps of the course are available in the Pro Shop located at the Whispering Winds Golf Course on Cannon. The course is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to dusk.

The course, with holes ranging from 100 yards to 250 yards, was designed and created by Outdoor Recreation. The head of the project, John Underhill, 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron director of Outdoor Recreation, has wanted to set up a disc golf course since becoming the director in 2010.

“Disc golf has been a growing sport, it’s become more popular,” said Underhill. “It’s a good way to get people out and doing something. Get out of the house, get out of the dorms, get some fresh air, and have fun.”

Several months ago, the order to start building was issued. Originally, there was a plan to use a professional designer for the course, but then the decision was made for Outdoor Recreation to handle the project.

“They told us to start working on it, and we did,” Underhill said. “It was 100 percent Outdoor Recreation.”

Once the equipment was purchased, Underhill planned the course. With a mostly open area, and using the overpass tunnel at the main gate to provide an extra difficulty, the course is a fun challenge for beginners and experts alike.
