The 27th Special Operations Maintenance Group and 27th Special Operations Medical Group welcomed back Cannon's honorary commanders for an in-depth look at operations as part of a tour at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., June 7.

The 27th Special Operations Wing Honorary Command Program is geared toward fostering military pride and local support from a broad group of surrounding community ambassadors. The goal of the program is to have all honorary commanders visit each group on base in order to develop a deeper understanding of the mission over their year-long tenure.

The honored guests were warmly welcomed at Unity Park by Col. Dave Wiesner, 27 SOMXG commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Paul Howard, 27 SOMXG superintendent, before heading to the first stop on their tour.

After a static tour of Cannon's Remotely Piloted Aircraft, the group was given a rapid reaction brief, followed by a flightline display of various aircraft equipment. Avionics, fabrication and armament specialists provided detailed descriptions of unique Air Force Specialty Codes needed to keep Cannon's flying assets airborne.

Lunch was served at the Landing Zone before departing for the second portion of the tour. Col. Jeffrey Gillen, 27 SOMDG commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Marvin Neely, 27 SOMDG superintendent, escorted the group upon their arrival at the clinic.

Cannon's guests were provided with a mission brief for the medical group and given the chance to see all ancillary services offered to members of the Cannon community - everything from SimMan interaction, flight medicine and mental health to optometry and family practice.

Cannon's honorary commanders departed the base with a deeper understanding of the missions of the maintenance and medical groups, along with a deeper appreciation of the capabilities the squadrons provide the 27 SOW.
