Sports lovers were dared to get off the sideline and get in the game this month in celebration of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.

During this month, awareness is raised about the important role physical activity plays in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Several events and competitions were scheduled throughout the month to highlight different sports and promote participation in physical activity.

According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, it is recommended that individuals spend at least two hours and 30 minutes each week participating in moderate aerobic activity.

With the responsibility of always being fit to fight, Airmen at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., understand the benefits of physical activity in regards to cardiovascular and muscular fitness. Physical activity can also help control weight, improve mental health and lower the risk for certain heart diseases and cancers.

Airmen participated in a free throw contest, push-up and sit-up competition, three-point shootout, soccer kick challenge and several races. Winners received a ribbon and a T-shirt.

No matter which sport one prefers, making time to break a sweat for just 30 minutes a day can improve overall health and add to life's longevity. Ready, set, play!
