The Pecos Trail Dining Facility at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., has stopped serving the traditional Midnight Meal offered at most dining facilities. Instead, starting May 1, 2013, the Flight Kitchen will extend their hours to 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. This change will provide food service through the entire night, rather than the original hour and half of the Midnight Meal period.

The Flight Kitchen was traditionally a dining facility program that supplied boxed meals to enlisted shift workers and air crews who, otherwise, may not have had access to the DFAC during its normal hours of operation. Meals can be ordered an hour in advance, and are made fresh upon request. A variety of foods are offered to fit the dietary needs of military members, and the dining facility is looking into expanding its horizons into even more options, such as large frozen meals, as the program develops.

While the Flight Kitchen has always existed at Cannon Air Force Base, it was not as well-known as the Midnight Meal. Roughly 80 people attended the Midnight Meal every night, as opposed to the more than 400 personnel who attend breakfast, lunch or dinner each day. By canceling this serving period, and focusing solely on the Flight Kitchen, the dining facility will save more than $200,000 per year.

"By cutting Midnight Meal, we're allowing the mission to continue across the base, even with the recent budget cuts," said 1st Lt. Nathaniel Beene, 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron Sustainment Flight commander.
