The 27th Special Operations Wing opened its doors to seven honorary commanders for a behind the scenes look into the mission support capabilities at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., April 10.

The 27 SOW Honorary Command Program is geared toward fostering military pride and local support from a broad group of surrounding community ambassadors. The goal of the program is to have all honorary commanders visit each group on base in order to develop a deeper understanding of the mission over their year-long tenure.

The honored guests were warmly welcomed at Cannon's Visitors Center by Col. Dave Piech, 27th Special Operations Mission Support Group commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Tracy Goodwin, 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron superintendent, before heading to the on base Child Development Center to start off their tour.

Cannon's guests were given a windshield tour of the base before heading to the 27th Special Operations Logistics Readiness Squadron and being greeted by the squadron commander, Lt. Col. Joyce Storm.

After an aerial delivery brief, the group headed to the flightline for a Forward Aerial Refueling Point demonstration between a static MC-130J Commando II and CV-22 Osprey.

Lt. Col. Dina Quanico, 27 SOFSS commander, welcomed the group upon arrival at the Pecos Trail Dining Facility. Before lunch, the distinguished visitors received Tazer and Military Working Dog demos from the 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron, as well as a 21 Gun Salute from Cannon's Honor Guard.

Honorary commanders were challenged after lunch once more by 27 SOSFS members as they suited up to enter the Combat Arms Training and Maintenance Shoot House. Col. Buck Elton, 27 SOW commander, met the group and simulated adversary forces for Cannon's guests.

Lt. Col. Anthony Figiera, 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron commander, assisted the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team as they wrapped up the tour with an explosives demo and brief on clearing techniques while showcasing some of their sophisticated machinery.

Cannon's honorary commanders departed the base with a deeper understanding of the mission of the 27 SOMSG and appreciation of the support capabilities the squadron provides the wing.
