Healthy eating - healthy living Published March 4, 2013 By Senior Airman Jette Carr 27th Special Operations Wing Public Affairs CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Air Commandos from Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., will be able to celebrate National Nutrition Month with the "Go for Green" program at the Pecos Dining Facility and healthy eating seminars throughout the month of March. Being "fit to fight" is a widespread concept throughout the Air Force. To better help Airmen make optimal choices on their daily meals, a new program was initiated. "Go for Green is a nutrition recognition labeling system, designed to provide a quick snapshot of the nutritional value of food choices provided by the Pecos Trail Dining Facility and other dining facilities Air Force wide," said Senior Airman Casey Olmsted, 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron. "Food items you should eat often are labeled green, those you should eat occasionally are labeled yellow and those you should eat rarely are labeled red." This color-coded system measures calories, fat content and other determining factors, rating the overall level of nutritional benefit for each food choice. "It's imperative for each individual to be mission-ready," said Olmsted. "The Go for Green initiative is a comprehensive way to help Cannon Airmen make better meal choices to fuel their bodies and live a healthy lifestyle." Also promoting good nutrition, the Cannon Health and Wellness Center will be hosting classes teaching healthy eating and cooking. These half-hour long seminars include: Power up with Breakfast - March 7, 4:30 p.m. Smart Snacking for Adults and Teens - March 14, 12 p.m. Eat Right the Healthy Way - March 21, 4:30 p.m. 20 Ways to Enjoy More Fruits and Veggies - March 28, 12 p.m. To get more information on the healthy eating seminars, contact the HAWC at 575-784-1003.
