Tax season is upon us again and it can be overwhelming and often one of the most stressful times of the year. However, completing and filing your tax forms can be painless, simple and free if you come to the Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Tax Office, which will open on Jan. 30, and remain open until April 15.

Following the January tax law changes made by Congress under the American Taxpayer Relief Act, the Internal Revenue Service announced it plans to open the 2013 filing season and begin processing individual income tax returns on Jan. 30.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on that date after updating forms, completing programming and testing of its processing systems. This will reflect the bulk of the late tax law changes enacted Jan. 2. The announcement means that the vast majority of tax filers - more than 120 million households - should be able to start filing tax returns starting Jan. 30.

All active duty personnel, retirees, and eligible dependents may have their federal and state income tax returns prepared at no cost in the Cannon Tax Office. Last year, the tax office prepared nearly 1,000 federal and over 1,200 state returns, saving the Cannon community $234,000 in fees.

Walk-in times will begin Jan. 30 through Feb. 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. These walk-in visits are appropriate for individuals who are eligible to file a Form 1040EZ - single or married with no children or property. On Feb. 11, the tax center will begin servicing individuals filing Forms 1040 or 1040A from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
