A safe new year

Starting the new year off with a reminder in personal responsibility, all bases under the Air Force Special Operations Command participated in safety day, Jan. 3.

Air Commandos at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., took that day to focus on safety problems specific to each squadron.

"We put together briefings on the top incident trends that occurred in the past year," said William Keely, 27th Special Operations Wing ground safety manager. "It was structured with emphasis on unit level issues, especially where they thought the next incident in their unit would take place. Maintenance focused on maintenance issues and the operations squadrons focused on flight safety issues."

Though AFSOC Safety Day is held at the beginning of each year, Keely said safety should also be considered all year long on a daily basis. In the year 2012, the 27 SOW had their safest year on record.

"We still had 64 people receive injuries requiring more than just self-aid and buddy care, which is still too many preventable injuries," said Keely. "Safety is an ever changing science, with newer safer technology and methods being developed constantly that can protect our people if utilized."

"Every Air Commando, regardless of rank or job, is invaluable to AFSOC, the Air Force and our nation," said Lt. Gen. Eric Fiel, AFSOC commander. "By looking out for each other, whether at work, at home, on leave or deployed, we will all continue to be successful."
