The Special Operations Forces Fly Away Security Team conducted combat training at Melrose Air Force Range, N.M., Dec. 18.

Members of the 27th Special Operations Security Force Squadron ventured out to the range to qualify for certification as FAST members.

The 5-man FAST element executed several scenarios consisting of Close-Quarters Battle, capture of High Value Targets and Tactical Combat Casualty Care while evading an Opposing Forces element at the range's Twin City.

The FAST members were armed with M4 carbine and M9 berretta simulated rounds to add to the realism of the training.

In addition to the OPFOR presence, FAST troops were faced with small-arms simulated fire, ground burst simulations, and smoke grenades. After each training scenario, team leaders were provided with intelligence on the following objective.

Each objective dictated whether a team would clear a compound or building, eliminate threats or extract troops. Teams were critiqued by OPFOR and discussed how to improve tactics for utilization during real-world events.
