A hum filled the air as the motorcycles were turned on in anticipation. The instructors demonstrated an exercise and now it was time for the Airmen to prove they were paying attention. The bikes growled, moving forward into a well-practiced dance as the students continued to learn.

Air Commandos unable to previously take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Beginner Rider Course due to lack of a bike, celebrated the arrival of 13 brand-new motorcycles at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. The first class utilizing these bikes took place Dec. 7-8, with every slot filled by eager Cannon Airmen ready to learn to ride on their own.

The motorcycles purchased by the 27th Special Operations Wing include six Honda Rebel 250 cruisers, three Honda CBR 250 sport bikes and four Yamaha XT250 dual sports, said Tech. Sgt. Adrian Secrist, 27 SOW motorcycle safety program coordinator.

"These three different motorcycles allow us the ability to offer new riders a choice of bikes similar to what they plan to purchase," he said. "These new bikes will allow us to offer a higher level of training to all our motorcycle riders - military, civilian and even dependents. Motorcycle safety training, as part of the wing's greater traffic safety program, is a key component to ensuring we provide proactive safety solutions for the base's riders."

Senior Airman Michael Burpoe, 27th Special Operations Maintenance Squadron munitions inspector, has wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle for nearly two years, but never had a bike to test out. The recent class gave him the chance as he rode one of Cannon's cruisers.

"They have everything here - a range to practice on, bikes for you to use and great instructors in the classroom," he said. "This class gives you time to develop the habits and skills to do it right. I'd recommend this course to anyone who wants a motorcycle license."
