Chasing fast food

Decomposing flesh and dripping blood became a common sight for runners as they were chased by the rotting dead, seemingly reanimated with an unquenchable taste for Air Commando. The competing Airmen had one thought, make it to the finish line with their life-lines intact.

With nearly 200 runners on the course, it was a feast for the scattered undead at the Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Zombie 5K, Oct. 19.

This free event was hosted by the Air Force Sergeants Association as a way for Airmen to learn about the organization and have fun with fitness.

"It was probably the most fun I've ever had at a run event," said Airman 1st Class Nathan Davis, 27th Special Operations Security Forces member. "The zombie makeup was exceptional and the enthusiasm they showed motivated people to embrace the fight or flight aspect of the race. I don't think I've ever run a faster 5K in my life."

The racers were given two flags to serve as their sign of life. It was these rags the zombies desired as they sprinted after the Airmen, doing their best to rip them away. In a course scattered with obstacles, the humans were forced to be fast on their feet while crawling under a bus and hopping through large tires during their escape to the finish line.

"The obstacles were cool and the zombies made it hard for people to get by them," Davis said. "No one in my group wanted to get caught and that motivated us to maintain a steady pace throughout the course. We wanted to earn those t-shirts."

T-shirts were given away to the top 10 runners to make it out of the zombie infestation alive.

"I finished eighth," Davis said. "More importantly, I thought the event was fun and really motivational. You never know if you'll like something until you give it a try. It's about finding something that interests you; there's something out there for everyone."
