A major incident response exercise was conducted at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Sept. 20.

Participation for this simulated train derailment extended beyond base personnel and involved several civilian and government agencies to assist with containing potential threats.

"Our exercises are getting more complex and more involved," said Tech. Sgt. Scott Douglas, 27th Special Operations Wing Inspector General office. "We are beginning to see more coordination with outside agencies which will greatly benefit personnel by providing more realistic training opportunities."

While mock emergency notifications went out across base via sirens and Giant Voice notifications, Air Commandos remained calm and collected while assessing and diffusing the staged incident.

"Communication during this exercise was highly effective and response times were much better than we anticipated," Douglas added. "The most important thing to maintain during events like this is situational awareness. Know what's going on, how to respond to incidents, and why certain procedures are being implemented."
