Dozens of Air Commandos stationed at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., visited the Clovis Hillcrest Zoo as part of a volunteer beautification project, Aug. 31.

Cannon's 5/6ers president, Staff Sgt. Fernando Gutierrez, 27th Special Operations Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, took care of organizing and coordinating the event between base personnel and the zoo.

"The purpose was to initiate a project that would maximize base personnel working and helping out within the local community, but we didn't know where to begin," Fernando said. "The zoo really caught my eye first because of the variety of amenities if has to offer to the local areas and those within the Cannon community."

The group of volunteers tackled various tasks around the zoo as part of the beautification project. The fence running along the entrance of the park was torn down and replaced with durable rope to give the exhibits a broader look. Landscaping was performed throughout the park and exhibits to augment and enhance the appearance.

Paint jobs were done to touch-up poles, benches and railings. Members from the 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron tore down the existing black swan exhibit and began replacing outer panels for an improved look. Several trips were made to the city dump as members also cleared away debris from their minor construction project.

"There was no cost for us," he said. "All supplies, snacks and water were provided to us by the zoo. They were amazed by the amount of people willing to help out the zoo and were extremely grateful, we were just happy to help and serve our community."

The group plans to have quarterly beautification projects with the zoo. With the help of other private organizations on base, the 5/6ers believe they can really make a difference.

Fernando expressed the importance of Airmen getting involved with projects like this that help out areas surrounding military installations. The sergeant noted that many good ideas to improve surrounding areas just need to be put into action and have support to back them.

"Everyone that helped out gave the project their all," he added. "The most rewarding part of the day was seeing everyone who came out and worked together as a team on various projects, walk away at the end with a smile and a true sense of accomplishment."
