Cannon breaks ground for future dorm

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M., --  The 27th Special Operations Wing held a ground breaking ceremony for the newest unaccompanied Airmen dormitory at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Aug. 27.

The new dorms will alleviate many Airmen from having to live in double occupancy.

"We are working toward single occupancy and this will move us closer to that goal until future dorms are built," said Tech. Sgt. Matthew Smith, 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron unaccompanied housing NCOIC."This project is ground breaking for the future of our Airmen!"

The $12.4 million project was initiated in April 2012.The 96-person dormitory will include quad-style rooms in which Airmen will share a common area that will include a washer and dryer per four Airmen.

"The new dormitory is something that Air Force Special Operations Command has long awaited," said Robert Ferry, 27 SOCES unaccompanied housing chief. "It's a step toward premier unaccompanied housing at Cannon."

The design of the project comes from the U.S. Air Force Unaccompanied Housing Design Guide and Cannon Air Force Base design and construction standards.

"I really feel as though this new dorm will provide Airmen with a more modern and up-to-date style of living," said Ferry.

The dorms are scheduled to be completed in fall 2013.
