Contractors are hard at work building a new Liberty Pool at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. This project includes state-of-the-art equipment and decking to keep the area at comfortable temperatures.

"The bottom of the shell is complete and our contractor is currently forming the gutter at the top of the pool," said Gregory Covington, project manager. "Once that's complete, preparation for the new deck will begin."

The standard-size pool will have grab rails, recessed steps, access ladders, handrails, lifts and stairs that all meet current Americans with Disabilities Act standards. For added safety, underwater and overhead lighting will also be installed.

In addition, families may also enjoy a waterslide with a plunge pool and an entirely new circulating tide pool for small children.

"Having the pool available is incredibly important," said Karen Ostrowski, president of the Cannon Spouses' Club. "It's an activity where you can stay cool during the summer and provides a chance for kids to have fun. There are also great swim lessons available during the day and on weekends."

Since contract award in September 2011, it has been the goal of the base to have the pool complex complete and open by Memorial Day - a date they have been determined to keep.

"We lost the whole month of December due to weather and we've lost quite a few days this month due to wind," said Karen Ward, construction project manager. "We're doing everything we can to get it done, including working Saturdays and Sundays. Now, with the switch to daylight savings, we get a few more hours in the evening."

Despite the weather set-backs, the 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron and 27th Special Operations Contracting Squadron have made this completion their number one priority and continue to work diligently to get the project done on time.
