Commissary to test extended hours in July

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  In an effort to better serve the Cannon community the base commissary will be testing extended hours of operation every Thursday during the month of July.

For the purpose of the trial period the commissary will change the hours of operation from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the following Thursdays July 7, July 14, July 21, and July 28.

Currently the operating hours on those days are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The hours are being tested to accommodate customer requests and determine possible operating hour extensions.

"Since the Defense Commissary Agency's main goal is to serve patrons we are happy to oblige and satisfy the voiced interest for extended hours," said store director John Sterling.

Later operating hours could help a variety of people in different situations and many are for the change.

"It would be nice if they stayed open later because then I wouldn't have to rush to the commissary immediately after work which would give me more time to figure out what I need," said Heather Osman,  27th Aerospace Medical Squadron public health secretary and day shift worker.

The new times would also be convenient to those who work shifts requiring them to work past 7 p.m.

"Extended hours would benefit shift workers who may not be able to utilize the commissary during their current hours of operation, said Staff Sgt. Amanda Hinds, 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron base defense operation center controller.

It would also be convenient for personnel who are on duty and cannot leave the base during late hours when other base agencies are closed, said Sergeant Hinds.

The Commissary's normal operating hours are as follows: Monday: closed, Tuesday-Friday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"We need the support of commissary shoppers to show that extended hours are justified and beneficial," said Mr. Sterling.

If enough people support the trial extended hours then a request for extended hours will be considered at DeCA headquarters.
