Staff Sgt. Christopher Wescott represented Cannon Air Force Base at the 2011 Musclemania New Mexico State Championships on May 21, 2011. Sgt. Wescott, A security forces patrolman with the 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron, earned first place in the junior heavyweight division, first place in the junior overall division and first place in the men's open heavyweight division.

The Musclemania Championship was Sgt. Wescott's fourth competition since he began competing in June 2009. Wescott started lifting weights in high school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He increased his weight training and began body building while he was stationed at Kunsan Air Base, Korea.

Currently, Wescott dedicates most of his free time to working out. He also communicates with his trainer and meets with a nutritionist every other week.

Hard work and dedication are necessary in body building, and the needed sacrifices are well worth it to Wescott. He likes to think of body building as an art, and the result as his masterpiece.

"My favorite part about body building is seeing the end result," said Wescott.

Like anyone else, Wescott fights mental excuses for not working out. He said sometimes after working all day he would really like to go home and take a nap.

Because of increased security measures members of the 27 SOSFS have been working 12-hour shifts for more than a month. Wescott said the longer shifts have created a few obstacles such as less time and energy. When he needs motivation he tries to think of people who are in worse situations.

"I remember my fellow Airmen who are deployed and working 15-hour shifts," said Wescott.

His positive attitude and mindset toward fitness keep him fit to fight, which is especially important now that the fitness standards have changed, he said.

"If you believe it, then you can achieve it," said Wescott.
