The Cannon Air Force Base Earth Day and Arbor Day celebration kicked-off April 28, with many activities promoting environmental awareness, including the Tree City USA Ceremony, story-telling and crafts in the base library, and a 5K fun run.

The 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron's Natural Resources Management Flight has sponsored this event annually since 1992 and in 1998 earned Tree City USA status for Cannon from the National Arbor Day foundation.

Airman 1st Class Jacob Burke, 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron engineering assistant, volunteered to help with one of the activities, story time.

"I went to the Clovis library and read some earth day books to the children," said Airman Burke. "I read the book 'I Stink', which was about the life of an animated dump truck. The children loved it for the fun pictures and interesting sound effects."

After reading to the children he helped them plant seeds in re-used yogurt cups filled with potting soil.

It was a unique and very enriching experience, he said. The children learned why it is important to conserve resources and to take care of the Earth.
