Making use of the strong desert winds, nearly 400 people flew kites at the 8th annual Kite Karnival, April 30, at Doc Stewart Park here.

Hosted by the Cannon Air Force Base Community Center, this free event had games, snacks, kite building stations, and a wide-open field for flying.

"The Kite Karnival is a chance for families, and anyone really, to come out and have some fun," said Paul Hopkins, community center manager, 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron.

Many families took their children out to fly a kite for the first time, including the Wallace family. Staff Sgt. Nathan Wallace, unit deployment manager, 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron, and his wife Adrienne took their daughters Cassie, 10, and Alyssa, 9, to the event where they both made their own kites at the crafts table.

They drew pictures on a tarp with the words "Cassie is awesome" and "Alyssa is Awesome", tied on colorful tails, and strung it up with a roll of string.

They enjoyed their first kite-flying experience, though they both agreed it was a lot of work because they had to run constantly back and forth to get it up into the air.

"Throughout the day kites were everywhere in the sky. The weather came along and it turned out to be a beautiful day," said Mr. Hopkins.

Cannon's Community Center plans to continue to host this program each year because of the positive relationships it creates within the community, he said. It's a chance for people to reminisce great childhood memories and create new ones for their own children.
