Lubbock mayor declares Cannon AFB personnel honorary citizens

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  A mayoral proclamation designating Cannon Air Force Base as Lubbock, Texas' "hometown military installation" was presented to Col. Wesley Norris, 27th Special Operations Maintenance Group commander, at the monthly meeting of the Lubbock Lions Club April 5.

The proclamation further declared all U.S. Air Force personnel stationed at Cannon to be honorary citizens of Lubbock.

Lubbock mayor Tom Martin signed the proclamation but was unable to present it in person. Martin has served as mayor of Lubbock since 2008.

At the meeting, Colonel Norris spoke to a crowd of around 200 and answered questions about Cannon's special operations missions and aircraft. He also discussed the base's planned growth and the potential impact on the region.

According to the group's website, The Lubbock Lions Club has been the largest Lions Club in the United States since 1972.

"Building community ties is a vital part of being a good neighbor. The people of Lubbock have always welcomed military members," Colonel Norris said. "This proclamation is evidence of the great relationship Cannon has with the community, and I was very proud to accept it."

The mayor's proclamation stated that Lubbock needs a military installation to call its own after the closure of Reese Air Force Base in 1997.
