More than 50 people attended the Cannon's Biggest Loser kickoff Jan. 10 at the base fitness center.  In the program, teams of four compete in a six-week program for total weight loss.

Weigh-ins took place Jan. 3-10 and have until Jan. 18 to lose pounds, using healthy weight loss techniques, before final weigh ins Feb. 18-23.  Prizes will be awarded to teams and individuals that lose the most weight.

Participants weighed in at the Heath and Wellness Center, where they received a computer analysis of weight, body mass index, basal metabolic rate, suggested weight loss and more.

Team members receive credit for extra "pounds" by completing Biggest Loser workouts Monday through Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the fitness center.  Teams also receive extra "pounds" for attending educational sessions and competing in team challenges throughout the program.

61 Biggest Loser participants in 2010 lost 428 pounds total, including one person who lost more than 20 pounds.  This year, more than 130 people signed up for the program.

Cannon fitness center director Rob Ewers said the fitness center is directly tied to mission readiness, and working out regularly is critical to a successful Air Force career and a heathy lifestyle.

"I ask myself daily what can I do to make a difference, and I follow current fitness trends. The Biggest Loser program at Cannon is a trend, based on the popular reality TV program, that motivates Airmen to get healthy, whether they need to lose five pounds or 50," he said.
