The 27th Special Operations Wing held its first media day May 26, providing 10 members of the New Mexico and Texas media a first-hand look at the mission and immense growth at Air Force Special Operation Command's newest wing.

Throughout the day the television, print and radio members toured the base. They were briefed by the wing commander, Col. Stephen Clark, viewed static aircraft displays such the AC-130H Gunship, MC-130W Dragon Spear and MQ-1B Predator, interacted with Airmen, and learned about the massive amount of military construction planned for the installation.

One highlight  included the opportunity to pilot a CV-22 Osprey simulator.

Some media members had not visited Cannon since the wing stood up under AFSOC, Oct. 1, 2007, and the day provided them an in-depth look at the base's mission and current issues.

Transformation is a theme for the 27 SOW, and that theme will remain constant over the next several years.

"In 2007, we stood the 27th (Special Operations Wing) up with three MC-130Ws, and once the build out is complete, we are projected to have 91 manned aircraft and 51 unmanned aircraft assigned to Cannon," said Colonel Clark. "At our endstate we will have executed approximately $1 billion in military construction and have roughly $5 billion worth of aircraft on our flightline."

Also, in terms of personnel, Colonel Clark said that 4,400 people are currently assigned to here. This will increase to 5,800 by fiscal year 2014.
