CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- After serving two years as commander of the 27th Special Operations Group, Col. James Cardoso officially relinquished command to Col. James Slife during a change of command ceremony held here March 8.

Two years ago the 27th SOG stood up with only four squadrons, Colonel Cardoso has since expanded the group to eight squadrons and approximately 1,000 airmen.

"This is an important milestone for the 27th Special Operations Wing," said Col. Stephen Clark, 27th SOW commander. "It signifies the continued maturation of our contribution to the joint force."

Colonel Clark then proceeded to award Col. Cardoso with the Bronze Star for his actions as the Combined Joint Special Operations Air Component commander and the Legion of Merit citation for his accomplishments at the 27th SOG.

"We have accomplised so much, but still have so much left to do," said Colonel Cardoso. "Fortunately, there is no better man to take the helm then Col. James Slithe."

As a previous commander of several special operations squadrons and experienced strategist in Washington, D.C. as Senior Program Analyst in the Irregular Warfare Division of the Directorate of Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation, he is aware of the immense task ahead.

"I have never been more excited about an assignment and a chance to accomplish the mission than I am now," Colonel Slife ended.

The SOG's mission to employ special operations combat air power in support of worldwide special operations missions.
