Golden shovels in hand, base leadership gathered under a tent at the Chavez West Child Development Center, for a groundbreaking ceremony Feb. 11 for a $5.6 million addition to the facility.

The project will add seven new classrooms and renovate existing facilities, according to information provided by Denise Vanderwarker, Airman and Family Services Flight chief. The kitchen, training areas and reception areas will also be upgraded.

Originally slated for completion in 2012, Ms. Vanderwarker said the additions should now be completed in November "to better meet the needs of Cannon's families."

She added that the new construction and renovated facility will provide a state of the art facility for 168 children and will be  the standardized design for a medium-sized CDC that will meet all fire, safety and health standards.

The project was awarded to Pace Pacific Corporation from Phoenix, Ariz.
