Cannon recognizes Energy Awareness Month

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  October 1 marks the beginning of Energy Awareness month and to recognize the month the base set goals to reach during the course of fiscal year 2010 to reduce Cannon's energy consumption. 

One objective is to raise the awareness level of Airmen to understand the energy footprint their daily activities leave. 

It can be as simple as changing the lightbulbs in your dorm room or house to a Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb, which is exactly what Steve Myers, the resource efficiency manager with the 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron, has been doing. 

Cannon replaced approximately 25,000 lightbulbs with CFLs, which has an annual savings of $110,000, and in terms of energy reduction, is similar to removing 1,842 cars off of the roads. 

But changing lightbulbs, watching water usage and taking advantage of various Energy Star appliances are just some ways individuals can reduce their energy footprint. 

There are three top objectives the 27 SOW hopes to accomplish. One is to surpass its requirement to reduce energy consumption by three percent and water reduction by two percent. 

The base will implement an Energy idea program and if you have an idea, it can be sent to 27SOCES.CEAEnergy@cannon.af.mil for review and implementation. 

The third of three top objectives is to have the base emphasize energy awareness to achieve the culture change of making energy a consideration in all we do. 

A medium that will use this is a campaign team chaired by the 27 SOW vice commander, Col. Ruedi Kaspar, and will also have leaders from each of the three groups and other tenant organizations complementing each other as core members. 

October is designated as Energy Awareness month, and articles highlighting Cannon's energy reduction progress can be found on www.cannon.af.mil.
