Local community leaders of Clovis, N.M., came out to the base's Unity Park to show their support for the members and their families at the 20th Annual Cannon Appreciation Day August 7.

The annual event, hosted by the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce, Clovis Industrial Development Corporation and the Committee of Fifty, is a show of the community's appreciaton for  the servicve of the Airmen as well as the contributions of  their families and civilian workers at Cannon.

"We look forward to putting on this event every year," said Rhonda Bargman, Chairman of the Cannon Appreciation Committee. "It's such a great opportunity to show those who ensure the freedom of our country just how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication."

Juan Garza, city commissioner, local business owner and committee member, has participated in the event since its inception and says he wouldn't miss the opportunity to honor those who protect and serve.

"We used to play softball, Clovis versus Cannon, but as we've gotten older, that doesn't really happen anymore," said Commissioner Garza.

"The new mission has brought much needed improvements to the base and surrounding communities," said Bruce Wilson, retired military member currently working at Cannon Commissary.

Master Sgt. Elizabeth Staub, said she loves the small- town atmosphere and that her family of two boys, David and Tyler, along with her active-duty husband, Master Sgt. Fred Staub, will embrace the town and enjoy what it has to offer. She is already looking for activities for the boys like such as community football as well as places to go camping and boating for the entire family to enjoy.

Sergeant Staub is assigned to the 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron, and her husband is a sensor operator with the 16 Special Operations Squadron. Both are new arrivals from Hurlbert Field, Walton Beach, Fla.

This year's event was enjoyed by approximately 3,000 attendees and required more than 100 volunteers to assist. In addition to the hamburgers, hot dogs, beans and chips, individuals could participate in volleyball and horseshoes. Everyone had the chance to take home one of the many prizes donated by the community groups from grills to patio sets to sauté pans and bikes.

"Cannon Appreciation Day was started to show Cannon personnel that the community of Clovis and Curry County is very interested in being involved with Cannon," said Ms. Bargman. "They want everyone at Cannon to know we are here for them, whether it's serving hamburgers or mentoring in some other area.
