Play a part in Cannon's energy reduction revolution Published Oct. 27, 2008 By 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- October is Energy Awareness Month and the 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron offers these tips to help Cannon reduce its energy consumption by three percent annually through 2015. Following these guidelines will help Cannon achieve its energy and water reduction goals. - Turn off lights when leaving an area for more than five minutes - Turn off unnecessary lighting and use natural lighting when possible - Change incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs available at base and housing self-help stores - Purchase only "Energy Star" labeled equipment and appliances - Activate the energy savings feature on monitors copiers and printers, or better yet turn them off at the end of the day - During cold months, open blinds and curtains to let the sun heat the area and - During warm months keep them closed to block the direct sunlight - Report leaky faucets and toilets to your facility manager - Dress accordingly for the weather and set the thermostat to a lower setting Changing habits and increasing awareness can save up to 10 percent on utility bills with no cost to you or the Air Force. Energy and water conservation not only saves money, but also decreases our nation's dependence on fossil fuels while reducing the amount of dangerous pollutants created through the production of electricity.
