Cannon conducting controlled burn at the Melrose Air Force Range Published Oct. 6, 2008 By 27th Special Operations Wing Public Affairs CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The Cannon Air Force Base Fire Department will be conducting prescribed burns from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Oct. 8 through Oct. 10 on the northeast sector of the Melrose Air Force Range. They will be burning Type 1 fuels, which consist mostly of grasses. People traveling and living around the Melrose Air Force Range may see and smell smoke during these days. During prescribed burns, firefighters work in a controlled environment to safely burn brush and other types of fuel, thus reducing the risk of hard-to control fires in the future.
