Laughter filled the air, along with barbecue smoke, smiles and the occasional runaway horseshoe as Cannon Appreciation Day was held Aug. 8 at Unity Park.

The annual event, in its 19th year, provides Airmen, families and workers at Cannon the opportunity to come out for an afternoon and enjoy fun, food and friends.

The day is sponsored by Curry County Chamber of Commerce, Clovis' Committee of Fifty and other local businesses and organizations  who provided hamburgers, hot dogs, beverages and prizes.

"It's a great opportunity to get out of the office and spend some time with fellow Airmen," said Airman 1st Class Kelly Duncan, 27th Special Operations Wing Legal Office.

Horseshoe and volleyball tournaments were held for a little friendly competition with the 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron taking the gold medal in volleyball. Tug-of-war matches were held as well.

Nearly $5,000 in prizes were given away over the course of the day including televisions, bicycles, grills, and more.

Winning one of the televisions was Maj. Damian Schlussel, 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron commander.

"I turned the TV over to (27th SOSFS booster club) to be used as a prize or raffled off inside the squadron," said the major. "The biggest reason is to give back to the unit; there are individuals who could better benefit from that prize."

Providing activities for children, Airmen and everyone else, the annual thank you from Clovis celebrates the relationship Cannon has with their nearby communities.
