"Fun in the sun" might be a summertime motto, but too much sun is not always fun. So volunteers from Albuquerque's Rio Grande Zoo brought a visit to the zoo, a traditional outdoor activity, indoors to children at the Cannon base library July 10.

Known as the "Zoo To You" program, volunteers travel throughout the state of New Mexico to give children the opportunity to see and learn what a zoo offers. The program has been operating for more than 27 years.

Mary Ramsey, a Rio Grande Zoo volunteer, said that this program is beneficial and fun for children who may not have the opportunity to visit the state's largest zoo.

"This program is fun not only for us, but for the children we visit; we get to teach some facts and show them the animals at the same time," she said. "Many of the volunteers at the zoo look forward to these "Zoo To You" trips."

The Rio Grande program teaches children about mammals, birds, reptiles and their secrets of survival. Each program differs with particular age groups and starts with kindergarteners.

"It's great to come to different schools throughout the state," said Mrs. Ramsey.
This program is offered through the base library, and is a part of its yearly summer programs.
