The Curry County Sheriff's Department and the 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron are working with each other to help provide incentives to designated drivers until Superbowl Sunday.

The program, which applies at nearly all bars and clubs in both Clovis, N.M., and on base, gives designated drivers free sodas for the evening, as well as a package containing a hat, t-shirt and other items.

"They sign a pledge card saying they won't drink," said Tech. Sgt. Todd Striplin, 27 SOSFS, and by doing receive a wristband entitling them to the sodas and a gift bag.

Donations for the gift bags are provided by local vendors and some of the places on base, said Sergeant Striplin, and though it does come as an incentive, everyone is reminded to have a plan for the evening anyway.

"We want to instill personal responsibility," said Maj. Damian Schlussel, 27 SOSFS commander.

Getting in trouble from an alcohol-related incident can ruin an Airman's career, said Major Schlussel, which is why if the program didn't exist, people should emphasize responsible planning.

"We're not here to tell people not to have fun," said the major, "but have responsible fun."

Depending on how well the program works, it may be extended beyond Superbowl Sunday. For more information call 784-2625.
