Sports -- Cannon's "Lethal Hoops" stomp Dyess' team Published Nov. 20, 2007 By Cannon's Lethal Hoops basketball team courtesy of Cannon's Lethal Hoops basketball team CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The "Lethal Hoops," Cannon's basketball team bounced to Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, to play their first two real games after a month and a half of practicing. "It was time for us to stop beating up on each other," said Nate Stephens, 27th Special Operations Maintenance Operations Squadron who is also the team coach and a player. The team was a short handed, traveling with only 10 of the 17 players who were trying out for the team and was also short a coach, Dennie Sutton, 27th Special Operations Civil Engineering Squadron. The Lethal Hoops began its season with an early lead against a much taller, bigger Dyess team. Cannon's team proved to be in much better shape, and jumped out to a large lead on fast breaks, led by starting point guard Stephen Johnson, 27th SOMOS, who led the team in assists, totaling 18 in both games. He was also three points shy of a triple double in game two on Sunday. Lydell Hudson, 27th Special Operations Support Squadron, hit some pivotal 3-pointers in the game to help Cannon pull away for good, while Dyess' Kevin Cox, 7th Equipment Maintenance Squadron, tried to stop them, averaging 12 rebounds per game. Sunday's game proved to be the same landslide with three Cannon players scoring in double figures. Leading scorers for the team were Emanuel "Jay" Daniels, 27th SOSS, with 25 points, Nate Stephens with 24 points and Larry Boyd, 27th SOCES, with 23 points. Two injuries knocked the team down to eight players; however, that didn't stop them from whipping Dyess by 31 points in the Sunday rematch. Dyess' Javier Martinez, 7th Aeromedical Dental Squadron, tried to slow them down, reducing a 31-point Cannon lead to 19, scoring 23 points, most of which came in the final 10 minutes of the game. Cannon won both games by 19 and 18 points, respectively. "It was a solid win for 'lethal hoops' squad," said Stephens, "After about six weeks of drills and inter-team scrimmages it was nice to finally see the team in an officiated game." Dyess will play Cannon at home Dec. 15 and 16 for some revenge and the Lethal Hoops are hoping for the same results.
