Swimming 500 meters, riding a bike for 10 kilometers, then running five more probably would not be considered the ideal weekend activity for most people.

For nine hardcore athletes, that was just what the doctor ordered on June 23, however, as the 27th Services Squadron held its annual mini-triathlon.

"It's to try and get people active," said Staff Sgt. Adam Salonish, 27th Services Squadron.
"I just wanted to say I did it," said Staff Sgt. Jeremy Bushnell, 27th Communications Squadron. "The goal is completion, not time."

Beginning at the base pool, participants swam five laps to complete the 500-meter portion before grabbing a bike and hitting the road. The bikes were either provided by the contestants themselves or were rented through outdoor recreation.

The bicycle-riding portion took them around Perimeter Road, passed the Portales Gate, and the riders reached the Fitness Center for the final stretch. The five-kilometer run began behind the golf course before finishing in front of the fitness center in front of a crowd of supporters.

"It's for someone who wants to do it," said Sergeant Salonish. "It takes a lot of discipline. If you're not in good shape, you won't have fun doing it."

Participants had the opportunity to compete as a team, but everyone involved competed as an individual.

n the men's category, Capt. Art Miller, 27th Medical Operations Squadron, won with a time of 59:15. In the women's category, Capt. Alesandra Neiman, 27th Civil Engineering Squadron, won with a time of 1:15:55.

The mini-triathlon is just one of a handful of summer fitness events that the 27th SVS has planned. Other events in the near future include a Cardio Challenge and a Push Up and Sit Up Competition.
