Sports - SFS roadblocks opponent’s win Published March 9, 2006 By Airman Thomas Trower 27th Fighter Wing Public Affairs CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- After a calm and steady first half, one of Tuesday’s games ran into overtime and ended in a bang. SFS lost their first-half momentum, allowing CMS to catch up and force the game into overtime. After a significant amount of persistence, however, SFS was able to regain a seven-point lead and win the game in overtime 57-50. The game started out slow, which was fortunate for the on-court referee, since his partner was late to the game. It seemed that as soon as the second referee walked through the door, the action picked up and so did the fouls. The game had 22 fouls between both teams. The CMS score was kept low by SFS forcing them to rush and attempt sloppy shots from all over the court, but CMS realized their mistakes and slowed down the game tempo to focus on accurate point attempts. Seven points behind at half-time, CMS huddled to plan a strategy to gain the upper hand against SFS. Their game plan showed results as CMS began to break SFS’ momentum and tie up the game. The final minutes of regular play and overtime were back and forth shots. Each team made a combination of two and three pointers, but the ultimate winner was SFS. CMS was kept alive throughout the game by its star players Anthony Matthews with 25 points and Dussie Poole with 18. Although they put forth their best efforts, they were ultimately shut down by SFS’ Tony Jones with 27 points, Rashaud Blair with 24 and Brent Murray with 16. Both teams will practice their skills before the March Madness events Tuesday through Thursday.
