Sports - And then there was one Published March 9, 2006 By Airman Thomas Trower 27th Fighter Wing Public Affairs CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Two Cannon basketball giants took to the court Tuesday to fight for an unblemished record. With 7-0 records, EMS and MDG competed to see which would be the only team in the base intramural league left with an undefeated record. EMS arrived in their new personalized uniforms ready to play and win, but their efforts were stopped short in a 61-69 loss. “The med group was hitting on all cylinders,” said EMS coach Pondus Wade. “We did not play our style of basketball. We hesitated too much and the shot selections were not our usual.” Arriving with a minimal roster of players, it was MDG’s five players against an arsenal twice their number. Despite playing the entire game without substitutions, Ean Forrest led the MDG scorers with 21 points. Warren Goldsmith followed with 18, while the fast footwork of Windell Buford kept EMS at bay, earning his team 12 points. EMS’ stats weren’t as spread out among all of the players as is the usual case. Jerry Williams kept his team going by pulling in 27 points, Mike Lacey followed his example with 14. At halftime and behind 27-44, EMS kept pushing when many teams might have thrown in the towel. Their efforts showed results on the scoreboard when they came within four points in the final 40 seconds. EMS was determined to “play with the confidence that the game is never over until the horn sounds,” said Coach Wade. “Any good team will always capitalize on mistakes and that’s just what [MDG] did — capitalize,” he said. “The best way to overcome the loss is to practice.” EMS faces its next team Tuesday against LRS#1. MDG will take a break until Feb. 27 when they also take on LRS#1. LRS#1 has been playing hard all season but the strength of the team has yet to be tested by the base’s two formidable opponents.
