Cannon volunteer judges encourage students at local science fair Published Feb. 23, 2006 By Janet Taylor-Birkey 27th Fighter Wing Public Affairs CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Twenty-five Cannon Airmen volunteered as judges for a district science fair held Feb. 2 at Marshall Junior High School. The goal for many of the volunteers was simply to encourage students. “These kids are future scientists and engineers, and we should take every chance to support and encourage them,” said Master Sgt. Raymond Stephenson, 27th Logistics Readiness Squadron. “Being a judge at the science fair is my way of supporting and encouraging them to stay in school and letting them know through education, nothing is impossible.” Giving back to the community is another reason Airmen volunteer. “Even though this is my first base, I have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the surrounding area, and I wanted to do something to support them,” said 2nd Lt. Michael Shopp, 27th Component Maintenance Squadron. Many Airmen said they enjoyed interacting with the kids, listening to them explain their projects and the pride the students showed. “You could see that they devoted a large amount of time and took great pride in their results,” said Lt. Shopp. “It was neat to see them open up to you after being timid when you first started interviewing them. I loved talking to the kids who were excited about their projects. You could tell how much they enjoyed science and learning,” said Staff Sgt. Amber Cerrato, 27th Security Forces Squadron. Cannon Airmen are valued as judges for the annual science fair. “They help us a ton each year,” said Mr. Richard Hahn, science department head at Marshall Junior High School, while sharing his appreciation for the Airmen who volunteered.
