The 27th Special Operations Wing hosted the 4th annual Bataan Memorial Death March to honor the memory of the service members who became prisoners of war on the Bataan peninsula during World War II, March 7, 2025.

Air Commandos, their families, and local community members participated in a 20K relay ruck, a 9-mile individual ruck, or a 5K run.

The Bataan Death March was a pivotal moment in American military history. During World War II, 75,000 U.S. and Filipino soldiers, including members from the 27th Bombardment Group redesignated as the 1st Provisional Air Corps Regiment (PACR), faced grueling conditions.

"Today, we honor those who held the line under the harshest conditions," said U.S. Air Force Col. Robert Johnston, 27 SOW commander. "The members of the 27th Bombardment Group defined warrior ethos, which continues to shape our identity and purpose."

As participants crossed the finish line, the event showcased not only physical endurance, but the mental resilience that defines Air Commandos and the Steadfast Line, providing an opportunity to unite as a wing.

The 27 SOW’s identity as “The Steadfast Line” honors the actions of the PACR during the defense of Bataan. Two battalions of maintenance, ordnance, intelligence, ground staff, and aircrew Airmen bravely held the left flank of the U.S. Army’s II Corps throughout the defense of Bataan, even escaping being surrounded in the final battles, earning them the moniker “The Steadfast Line.” Their commitment to the mission reflects our dedication to putting the mission first and having the grit to defend against our Nation’s adversaries.

“The 27th Bombardment Group faced unimaginable challenges, and yet they held the line,” Johnston continued. “Our Air Commandos today have similar qualities, a dedication to service, and a willingness to put the team and the mission above all else.”

The Steadfast Line continues to carry forward the legacy of those who came before them, committed to executing the mission with the same strength and honor. Our success is built on the unwavering commitment to the team and the mission, ensuring we are always ready to provide unconventional air power—any place, any time, anywhere.
