CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The Cannon Air Force Base Range Management Office is partnering with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish for the sixth consecutive year to host the Melrose Air Force Range (MAFR) Pronghorn Population Management Hunt Program. This unique initiative provides hunting opportunities for active-duty members, Purple Heart recipients, and youth hunters.
The Range Management Office is also seeking experienced volunteers to serve as hunt masters. These volunteers will act as guides for participants. The program includes four weekend hunts, with up to four hunters per weekend.
Target volunteers include Department of War civilians and service members in the rank of Senior Airman (E-4) or higher. Applicants should have significant hunting experience and must possess a valid hunter safety education card or certificate.
As part of Cannon’s commitment to Air Commando morale, the program allows military members to pursue local hobbies in a safe, controlled environment. By opening the range — which is typically restricted for military training — the base provides the community with exclusive access to conservation efforts and the outdoors.
"This program is for everybody," said Jose Casillas, MAFR range director. "The hunters are active-duty members and Purple Heart recipients who sacrifice for our country, alongside the next generation of youth hunters. I enjoy providing them the opportunity to harvest a healthy bounty while giving back to the community."
The hunt, which will take place in the fall, is open to New Mexico youth between the ages of 12 and 17 years old through the state’s lottery system. Youth hunters apply online by creating an account with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, selecting up to three preferred hunts by species, weapon type, and location. If not selected for one of their top choices, applicants may be awarded a spot on Melrose Range. Adults may also apply, with a separate lottery designated for active duty service members and Purple Heart recipients.
Qualified personnel interested in serving as a hunt master must contact Jose Casillas by July 17, 2026.
