Cadets visit Cannon

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  Cadets from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., visited Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., for four days beginning April 10.

A little more than 400 miles away at the USAF Academy, lieutenants for the Air Force and future leaders for this nation are made. These future leaders spend four years adhering to a strict regimented schedule that includes a rigorous academic agenda, mandatory formations and athletic activities, parades and inspections and other military duties. A break from the norm and an opportunity to familiarize them with a mission they may eventually support and aircraft that they may one day pilot was well worth travelling to Colorado's bordering neighbor to the south.

After a flight from Colorado Springs, aboard an MC-130J Commando II, 49 cadets arrived at Cannon, nestled on the east side of the "Land of Enchantment" and the "Western Home of Air Commandos." This is where several dozen cadets spent a few days becoming acquainted with the Air Force Special Operations Command mission, viewing various demonstrations and enjoying tours of base facilities.

Throughout the duration of the visit, the group-- a mixture of first through fourth-class cadets-- received a mission brief during breakfast with Col. Tony Bauernfeind, 27th Special Operations Wing commander, received incentive flights with four different flying squadrons, participated in physical training with 26th Special Tactics Squadron personnel and observed demonstrations from several squadrons and units within the 27th Special Operations Mission Support Group.
