Maj. Gen. Joseph Ward, Army and Air Force Exchange Service deputy director, visited Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., April 9-11 to view the ongoing growth of the base and discuss the future of Exchange services.

Ward is one of 54 active duty service members assigned to the Exchange to carry out this mission. The Exchange employs more than 38,000 civilian associates worldwide.

During the visit, Col. Tony Bauernfeind, 27th Special Operations Wing commander, and Ward met with members of Team Cannon as they toured the base emphasizing Cannon's unique mission and growth.

While touring new construction on the southeast side of the base, Ward was excited by the idea of adding an Express option for Airmen with a focus of pushing the mission on the flightline.

"We want the Express to be all about convenience," Ward said. "We want to beef up the grab-and-go experience the Express offers, especially for young Airmen coming onto the installation."

"It's important for Airmen to be mission-ready in body and spirit," Ward said. "Offering fresh, healthy choices in a convenient location makes it easier to make the right nutritional decisions and helps Airmen build resiliency."

Not coordinated with Ward's visit, but still very good news for Cannon Airmen and their families, Exchange and base officials met with a Starbucks business development representative on facility requirements to bring a Starbucks to the Exchange mall.

Bauernfeind expressed his appreciation to Ward for taking on this huge quality of life initiative.

"At every meeting I have with our Airmen or their families I am asked, 'when will Starbucks open,'" Bauernfeind said. "Now it looks like I'll have good news to share with them."
