The 27th Special Operations Wing hosted the First Friday's event for the month of February at the Landing Zone with the theme "Cannon Carnival" at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Feb. 7.

The festivities included a showing of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, carnival food, two inflatable bouncy houses and many children's games and activities such as ring toss, balloon darts, sack races, face painting, and a pie-eating contest.

Children sporting painted faces and decorated balloons ran from one activity to the next, some with parents and friends in tow. One such toddler was the son of Capt. David Calderon, 27th Special Operations Comptroller Squadron financial analysis flight commander.

"This has been a good opportunity for me to have quality father and son time and I look forward to more opportunities in the near future," said Calderon.

As children lined up to have their pictures taken by the carnival paparazzi, a polite six-year-old waited her turn as she climbed behind the carnival princess and muscle-man cutouts to take her picture.

"I got a rainbow with clouds painted on my face, and I am having fun with my friends," said one little girl named Tatiana.

Like Tatiana, Staff Sgt. Veronica Smith, 27 SOCPTS deputy disbursing officer, appreciated the family-friendly environment as well as the opportunity to visit with coworkers.

"Events like these bring the community together," Smith said. "The first Friday of every month, each squadron has the opportunity to host this specific event and this was our month. It took a lot of work, but we had tons of help from the 27th Special Operations Wing Staff Agencies."
