Ladies Auxiliary VFW post 3280 supports Cannon’s Angel Tree Published Dec. 9, 2013 27th Special Operations Wing Public Affairs CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Cannon's Angel Tree program received a tidal wave of support today at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. Members from the Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars post 3280 descended upon the base exchange with more than $2,000 to spend on gifts for Air Commandos in need. Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars post 3280 Treasurer, Susan Willis, described the event as a great opportunity to connect the community with the base. "Through donations from the local community, we were able to raise enough money to hopefully make this holiday season even more special for many kids," said Willis as toys, clothes and other desirable items were piled onto her shopping cart. The holiday season can be a difficult time for some. Programs such as Angel Tree, a yearly program dedicated to making sure every child has a present, is one way to take make a contribution. In addition, by shopping at the exchange, the Ladies Auxiliary was given a 10% discount, which meant savings were immediately cycled into the purchase of additional gifts. Willis is no stranger to being on the receiving end. "I raised five kids, and there were times I did not always have the ability to provide gifts for all of my kids," reflected Willis. "I just hope the children receiving gifts this year know that there are those of us who truly care and we want them to have a memorable holiday season." As an organization dedicated to serving the veterans of this country and communities in honor of the sacrifices and commitment of every man and woman who have served in uniform, the Ladies Auxiliary is involved with various initiatives ranging from scholarships, cancer aid and research to helping meet the needs of patients hospitalized in VA Medical Centers and other hospitals throughout the country. "I couldn't be more proud to serve with post 3280 and have the opportunity to help our local community, to include our Cannon neighbors," said Pat Ellis, Ladies Auxiliary VFW post 3280 trustee. "The VFW is a fine organization and our Auxiliary is always looking for ways to make a difference."
