The holiday season officially began Dec. 5, at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., with the holiday parade and tree lighting ceremony.

The parade consisted of floats created by the different squadrons at Cannon. It wound through the Joe Cannon Estates before making its way to the eagerly waiting crowds gathered at the Landing Zone.

"It was an amazing effort from the squadrons," said Lt. Col. John Kenyon, 27th Special Operations Wing wing chaplain, who recited the invocation asking for blessings and safety over the holiday season. "I am really impressed. Events like this play a huge role in the solidifying and building of the Cannon community."

The event also included carols sung by a local children's choir, hot chocolate provided by the base's first sergeants, an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus and the decorative lighting of the base tree. The tree will stand in front of the landing zone until after the New Year.

Before the ceremony ended, Col. Tony Bauernfeind, 27th Special Operations Wing commander, said a few words thanking the squadrons for their participation and wishing Cannon a safe and joyful holiday season.
