The Holidays are ripe with commercials. Even before Halloween, the ads started appearing, telling you what all kids need and that this or that gizmo will make your children happy. But, what about those who can't afford the perfect present, or any present for that matter?

This Holiday season the base first sergeants are teaming up with the Airmen & Family Readiness Center, the Exchange, the Spouses Club and volunteers from across Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., and the city of Clovis, N.M., to help those Air Commandos in need through the Angel Tree program.

Angel Tree is a yearly program dedicated to making sure that every child has a present. Children ranging from newborns to 16 years old are signed up for the program. Then, their name, the winter items they need, their size, and a wish list of toys or gifts are written on a paper angel and hung on a tree. The tree is then placed outside the Exchange and any shopper who so wishes may take an angel and sponsor a child. The angel and the child's presents are then placed in a box by the tree. After all the children have received sponsorship the presents are bagged and handed back to the base first sergeants for distribution.

This is the tenth year that the Angel Tree has run at Cannon, and the first year that civilians and active duty members have both been able to be a part of it.

"The Angel Tree is a great way to support families when they need it most," said Charles Harris, 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron community readiness consultant. "It's a way for the base to take care of their own."
